This is the original NASA logo released in 1959 and designed by James Modarelli. Affectionately referred to as "the Meatball," the blue circle represents a planet while the white dots and four-pointed stars represent space. The red swooping v shape is based on a supersonic plane that was in development at the time, which inspired Modarelli with its upturned nose and cambered wing. A white oval stands in for an orbital path.
